narrative

1) Give an example from film or television that uses Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.

-The notebook:
-equilibrium: at the start Allie has a peaceful life.
-disequilibrium: Allie meets Noah, who she falls in love with and he is poor and her family                         doesn't accept of their relationship
-new equilibrium: Noah works hard to build a house for them and they get married and have                     children and die of old age together.

2) Complete the activity on page 1 of the Factsheet: find a clip on YouTube of the opening of a new TV drama series (season 1, episode 1). Embed the clip in your blog and write an analysis of the narrative markers that help establish setting, character and plot.

-The first 30 seconds of this scenes makes us think that this is a heavy crime drama with a main lead who is a detective who has been working for many years on hard crime cases that he has to solve, this is just another crime he needs to solve. However after the speech the audience realise that it isn't a heavy crime drama but just a comedy-crime drama, this is because of the speech and talking between the two detective, also the setting slightly changes to a more comfortable and funny, whereas at the beginning it was slow and eerie. The plot is to find out who the theft was committed by and to catch them.

3) Provide three different examples from film or television of characters that fit Propp's hero character role.

-Harry potter and the chambers of secrets:
        -The hero is Harry Potter.
-Spiderman (homecoming):
        -The hero is Spiderman.
-SWAT Firefight:
        -The hero is Paul Cutler.

4) Give an example of a binary opposition.

-Harry potter and the chambers of secrets:
-The hero(Harry)and the villain(Voldemort),this is because there is sense of opposition between the        two.

5) What example is provided in the Fact-sheet for the way narratives can emphasise dominant ideologies and values?

-In romantic movies/series the heroine/girl will get saved by the hero/boy.
-Villains will always get caught and get punished.
                                                                                                                                                                                      6) Why do enigma and action codes (Barthes) offer gratifications for audiences?

-Action codes promise the audience disequilibrium, meaning there will be drama and the problem will eventually be solved e.g. by the hero.
-Enigma codes make the audience curious as there is mystery set.

7) Write a one-sentence summary of the four different types of TV narrative:

  • Episodic narrative (the series) -No need to watch episodes in order because the issue is fixed by the end of the show
  • Overarching narrative (the serial) -There will be a cliff-hanger and a recap since the story is completed at the conclusion of the series rather than at the end of the episode.
  • Mixed narrative -Both overarching and episodic, with development and minor conflicts that have solutions.
  • Multi-strand overlapping narrative (soap narrative) -over 1 or 2(or more) episodes there will be multiple stories or problems solved, each episodes will end in a cliff-hanger making the audience intrigued to know what will happen
8) How does the Factsheet suggest adverts use narrative?

-Adverts set out a problem for the audience but also immediately offer a solution, solutions and conflicts are really important and crucial.
